Give a few hours and make a difference.
Since the pantry's beginning, it has been staffed and run largely by volunteers in the neighborhood. Below are the many different ways you can volunteer your time to help. Take a look and let us know what works best for your schedule by submitting the form (also below). A volunteer coordinator will get in touch with you shortly after.
Regular Volunteer Opportunities:
Sorting Volunteer (Evenings)
Join us on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the Northside Food Pantry from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to help sort and bag food. These efforts will make it easier for volunteers to keep the shelves stocked for clients during the week.
The work is physical work. We'll be unpacking and sorting boxes of mixed food items sent by the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and re-packaging bulk goods from Sysco.
Let us know if you can make it by filling out our volunteer sign up form below.
Enter "Sorting" as the keyword in the sign up form below.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Volunteers during pantry hours help organize visitors (handing out numbers, for example) and help stock shelves, redistribute food and push grocery carts out to cars or bus stops for clients.
Ideally, you can commit to the full shift on a regular schedule (i.e., weekly on Tuesdays or once a month on Wednesdays). But two-hour or occasional shifts can also be arranged (please mention this preference in your note below).
Enter "Pantry" as the keyword in the form below.
Clean and Prep Volunteer
Thursdays: flexible between 9 a.m. and noon.
Clean and Prep volunteers help clean and prep the food pantry. The pantry is closed to clients on these days which means it's a little less chaotic.
Enter "Clean and Prep" as the keyword in the form below.
Delivery Truck Volunteers
Mondays: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
On Mondays, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank makes its delivery of items we've ordered the previous Friday. Strong arms and strong backs are needed to unload the truck each week.
Enter "Delivery Truck" as the keyword in the form below.
The pantry gets calls from a variety of places that have food to donate (Ex: emptying a kitchen after a death in a family, picking up from a grocery store or collecting items donated during a drive off-site).
The catch is often that it needs to be picked up within 24 hours. We need volunteers with appropriate transportation and a willingess to be on the call list when these opportunities arise. It's okay to refuse a specific job if it doesn't work with your schedule. All we ask is that you be responsive (yay or nay) when you get a request.
Enter "On-Call" as the keyword in the form below.
One-time Event Volunteers
If you want to know about one-time volunteer opportunities like helping with a toy drive, repainting at the pantry, or other opportunities, please let us know. When these opportunities come up, we'll send you an email.
